The Mi Wi-Fi Range Extender Pro helps extend an existing 2.4GHz wireless network into areas where reception is weaker. Its compact black body plugs into a mains outlet and uses two external antennas to receive and rebroadcast the wireless signal. At 80 × 54 × 70mm, it is easy to position near a corridor, room entrance or other suitable point between the router and the area you want to cover.
The extender supports IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n, with a theoretical 2.4GHz link rate of up to 300Mbps. It is a single-band device and does not provide a 5GHz wireless connection. That link-rate figure is not a guaranteed internet speed: the upstream connection, signal quality, neighbouring networks and connected devices affect actual results. A strong connection back to the router is especially important for an extender.
Start setup close to your router, then follow the Xiaomi Home app guidance to connect the device to the existing network. Once configured, move it to a location that still receives a useful router signal. Placing it directly inside a dead zone usually leaves too little signal to extend effectively. Try an outlet between the router and the weak area, then check reception where you normally use your phone, computer or smart home equipment.
Xiaomi describes support for up to sixteen connected devices, although performance depends on their activity and the available wireless connection. The MT7628K processor runs at 580MHz, with 2MB of ROM and 8MB of RAM. Wireless security supports WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK encryption. Keep the wireless password secure and use an encryption mode supported by the devices on your network.
